NASA's Mars Odyssey detected water ice in the northern hemisphere. During the winter months, the icy soil is covered by a thick layer of carbon dioxide ('dry ice') frost obscuring the water ice signature. This animation is match-framed to #2778 and #2780. It shows the areas of ice during a martian winter.
A comparison of the water ice detected by Odyssey in northern summer and winter seasons. In some places the water ice content is more than 90 percent by volume.
